What is pediatric endodontics?

Pediatric endodontics is a specialized field of dentistry focused on diagnosing and treating dental issues in children, particularly those affecting the dental pulp (the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels) and root tissues. This branch of dentistry deals with a variety of conditions, such as tooth decay, dental trauma, and developmental issues, ensuring that children receive the care they need to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

As a board-certified, award-winning endodontist, Dr. Megan King is trained to manage these issues with techniques tailored to the unique needs of young patients.

When does a child need endodontic treatment?

Children may need endodontic treatment for several reasons.

Tooth decay

Deep cavities can infect the dental pulp, causing significant pain and requiring endodontic intervention to save the tooth.

Dental trauma

Accidents can lead to chipped, cracked, or displaced teeth. Quick, specialized treatment is essential to preserve the tooth and prevent further damage.

Developmental issues

Sometimes, teeth may not develop properly, leading to complications that require endodontic procedures to ensure proper dental health and function.

Signs your child may need a root canal

Recognizing the signs that your child may need a root canal can help in seeking timely treatment:

  • Persistent tooth pain: If your child experiences persistent pain, especially while chewing or putting pressure on the tooth, it could indicate pulp damage.
  • Swelling and tenderness: Keep an eye out for swelling around the affected tooth or gums.
  • Discoloration: A tooth that becomes darkened or discolored may signal underlying pulp issues.
  • Pimple on the gums: If you notice a pimple-like bump on the gums around the affected tooth, it could indicate infection.

Most often, your child’s pediatric dentist will refer you to our office after they notice an issue. This is why it’s very important to maintain your child’s twice-a-year dental checkups. Although we come highly recommended by pediatric dentists throughout Atlanta, no referral is needed to schedule a visit at our office.

Are root canals safe for children?

Yes, root canals are safe for children. Modern techniques and advanced technology have made root canals a routine and effective procedure for saving damaged teeth. As an endodontist, Dr. King is specially trained to perform these procedures, ensuring safety and comfort throughout the procedure.

Types of pediatric endodontic treatment

Endodontic treatment is generally done on permanent teeth, not baby teeth.

Pulp caps: Sometimes a cavity or trauma fracture can just barely graze the pulp. When this happens, we can place a medicine, also known as a pulp cap, over the pinpoint affected pulp to achieve patient comfort and sustain the health of the pulp.

Pulpotomies: A pulpotomy is necessary when a cavity or trauma affects much more of the dental pulp. In a pulpotomy, we remove the pulp tissue from the superficial part of the tooth but leave the pulp tissue in the roots. Our pulpotomies can provide rapid pain relief and are, at times, a great treatment option for a child.

Root canals: When infections or extensive damage compromise the dental pulp, root canals become necessary. This procedure helps relieve pain and save your child’s tooth.

Regeneration: Regeneration treatments aim to revascularize a tooth with a necrotic dental pulp. This can be an optimal treatment if a young tooth is still growing and developing.

How to choose an endodontist for your child

When selecting an endodontist for your child, several key factors can ensure you make the best choice for their comfort and care:

  • Technology and Techniques: Advanced tools and techniques significantly impact the comfort and effectiveness of treatment. For instance, we use advanced GentleWave® technology to thoroughly clean and disinfect the root canal system, providing a less invasive and more comfortable experience for your child.
  • Sedation Options: Dr. King works closely with an anesthesiologist to provide safe sedation options for children who may experience dental anxiety or have special needs.
  • Experience with Children: Look for an endodontist who has experience treating children. This ensures they are adept at handling the unique needs and anxieties that young patients may have.
  • Patient Reviews and Testimonials: Reading reviews and testimonials from other patients can provide insights into the endodontist’s approach to care and how well they handle young patients. Look for feedback on both the clinical outcomes and the overall patient experience.
  • Communication and Compassion: Choose an endodontist who takes the time to explain procedures in simple, reassuring terms and demonstrates a compassionate approach. This helps build trust and reduces anxiety for both you and your child.

Tips for preparing your child for endodontic treatment

Preparing your child for endodontic treatment can help alleviate their anxiety and ensure a smoother experience:

  • Discuss the procedure: Use simple and reassuring language to explain what will happen during the visit. This helps demystify the process and reduces fear of the unknown.
  • Comfort items: Bring along their favorite toy or blanket for added comfort. Familiar objects can provide a sense of security and ease during the treatment.
  • Positive reinforcement: Highlight the benefits of maintaining healthy teeth and praise them for being brave. Positive reinforcement can motivate your child to approach the treatment with confidence and calm.
